Its been a week since the release of the iPad, and we are already wondering what it means for the upcoming school year. College students everywhere will soon rejoice at never having to carry another notepad, textbook, or calculator. The iPad is every educational tool weve ever used, all rolled into one. If it really does catch on, and there is good reason to think it will, its going to change everything we know about the classroom experience.
Lets start with the books. College students are required to read a lot. If your English literature class doesnt load you up with stacks of books, your physics, chemistry, and anthropology classes will. It all adds up pretty quickly, and before you know it, you understand why your dad keeps complaining of back pain.
The iPad changes all of that especially with various iPad applications coming up. It wont be long before every textbook known to humankind is available on the device. Instead of having to carry thousands of pages with you wherever you go, youll have it all in a 1.5 pound package. On top of that, the textbooks available by custom software development services on the iPad are likely to be much better than their paperback counterparts. Imagine flipping through the electronic pages of a chemistry textbook to play a simulation that explains how water changes phase from a solid to liquid. This is just one possibility.
As college students make the shift towards the iPad, they will also make the shift away from notepads and pencils. The iPad's multi-touch interface makes note-taking easier than ever. It practically eliminates ever having to copy someone else's notes or using a tape to record lectures. We will soon see bundles of new iPad apps that promise to be the best note taking suite available for the device. Watch out. Skipping class just got a heck of a lot easier.
Math and science classes are also set to undergo a transformation. If you have taken some of the more advanced math and science classes, you probably remember having to purchase a very expensive calculator that, when compared to the iPad, is fairly limited in terms of its functionality. Those days are gone. The iPad will encompass those fancy calculators as well, and it will do so much more than what they are capable of. What with iPad application development going on a full steam ahead, tomorrow’s students will be able to open up a fresh notepad document and copy the results directly from their calculator app. This too, is just one possibility.
There are already many great calculator programs available on the iPhone. Wolfram Alpha, now available for a much lower price, gives its users access to a gigantic array of functions and publicly accessible data. None of this was ever available on a pocket calculator, and now it can easily be accessed from the iPad during class. With the prospect of the iPad becoming cheaper and iPad app development being the new in thing any iPad app idea that you have will soon be developed by those hungry for more iPad app developers and will soon be available in the market!
In the not-too-distant-future, every student will have access to these kinds of apps, and they will be able to share their answers with their professors and fellow students in real time. This provides an unprecedented kind of feedback that allows instructors to gauge their students' understanding in the middle of class. Right now, many of these classes make use of the popular "clicker" device used to monitor how well students understand multiple choice lecture questions for software companies. Imagine how much more involved it will be when students can submit graphs, drawings, and solutions to complex problems.
Though few marketing dollars have been spent on targeting the college crowd, it is quite clear that the iPad is set to become an educational juggernaut. There are a lot of great technologies and ideas that never catch on because most people are unwilling to adopt them. This won't be the case with the iPad. Because the device replaces so many heavy things that college and high school students carry around every day, and it does so while adding in a ton of extra features, its purchase is more than justifiable. If Apple can add fuel to the fire by lowering the price of iPad-only educational materials, every college student will soon have one. With the prospect of the iPad becoming cheaper and iPad app development being the new in thing any iPad app idea that you have will soon be develop mobile apps by those hungry for more iPad app developers and will soon be available in the market!
We are about to see a genuine revolution in education. Someday, not too far from now, well look back at the days when people used to carry pages upon pages of text on their backs as if it were some long gone prehistoric era. "Seriously," well wonder, "people used to have to do that?" Take a moment and let that sink in. Can you feel it? The workload just got lighter.
